India is an increasingly important growth market for Amazon, as the country is one of the last big consumer markets and is estimated to generate USD 200 billion in e-commerce sales by 2026, according to American multinational investment bank and financial services company Morgan Stanley. As a market, India could potentially contribute 15% to 20% to Amazon’s growth over the period 2020 – 2025. The American e-commerce giant announced in 2020 that it will invest at least USD 6 billion in India.
In the same year, the company launched its Local Ships on Amazon program in India, enabling customers to place orders from their neighborhood stores and get quick deliveries through the Amazon infrastructure. Boosting sales immediately and adding new categories like groceries, furniture, electronics, apparel, and toys. American management consulting firm Kearney points out that e-commerce growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is outpacing that of Tier 1 cities.
